With nearly a dozen soups to choose from picking the best one wasn’t easy, but by the end of the night it was Dylan Simpson’s delectable mushroom coconut soup that garnered the most votes, earning the Crimson cook the 2016 Golden Ladle.

The margin of victory was close, but Simpson’s soup managed to earn three more votes than Riley Black’s cauliflower goat cheese soup, relegating the four-time defending champion to second place (Black, who is the sous chef at the Crimson, tied for first last year with Noah Jessome).
Third place went to Lobstick Lodge’s Liyo Jose for his chicken curry soup.
Other restaurants that competed in the mouth-watering event included Coco’s Cafe, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, Karouzo’s Steakhouse, Papa Georges Restaurant, the Jasper Brewing Company, Syrahs of Jasper, Chateau Jasper and Earls.
More than 100 residents took part in the annual soup-tasting event, Oct. 2, to close out Alberta Culture Days. For $20 soup-tasters got to purchase a handcrafted one-of-a-kind bowl made by former Jasperite Julie Anne McMath. All of the proceeds went to Habitat for the Arts.
