Jasper Fire Chief Greg Van Tighem stepped aside, Nov. 13, to make way for a new fire chief: Grade 4 student Kira Peel.
Decked out in a fire safety jacket and leopard print shoes, Peel spent the day helping Van Tighem carry out his chiefly duties.
Peel won the chance to be chief for the day after creating a fire evacuation plan for her family during Fire Prevention Week last month. Her name was drawn from among all the students who created plans.
As she gave a visiting group from the Jasper Adult Learning Centre the skinny on what happens during a fire drill, the deposed chief watched with a smile.
Shes a good chief, I have high hopes for her, Van Tighem said of his temporary replacement.
Peel said shed love to be a firefighter when she grows up. But since that wont happen for a while, she settled for using her power as chief to roll up to the Jasper Elementary School in style; riding shotgun in a gleaming fire truck.
