Film Club: new season, new time

It’s film club season again. But this year movie-lovers might notice something a wee bit different. Instead of its usual start time, the Jasper Film Club’s screenings will begin at 7 p.m.

Film ClubIt’s film club season again. But this year movie-lovers might notice something a wee bit different.

Instead of its usual start time, the Jasper Film Club’s screenings will begin at 7 p.m.

So, the club is asking Jasperites to give your heads a collective shake, to wipe the usual 7:30 time slot from your brains and replace it with 7 p.m.

The season will kick off Oct. 2 with The Grand Seduction—a Canadian comedy about a fishing village desperate for a doctor, and willing to do almost anything to get one.

For instance, once the townspeople of Tickle Head, Newfoundland have an MD in their sights, they go so far as learning cricket, his favourite sport—and playing it in front of him—and offering his favourite meal in a local restaurant.

They do all of this because a doctor is the key to the community’s future.

The film, which was released in May and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, is based on the 2003 French-Canadian film, La Grande Séduction, and is the winner of a Canadian Screen Award, with actor Gordon Pinsent taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Along with Pinsent, the film’s cast is filled out with the likes of Taylor Kitsch—best known for his role in the television series Friday Night Lights—and Brendan Gleeson of Harry Potter fame. Gleeson takes on the role of Murray French, the man pulling the strings behind the seduction of Dr. Paul Lewis (Kitsch).

To see The Grand Seduction, head to Chaba Theatre for 7 p.m. Oct. 2.

That night, the film club will be selling memberships for the season. They are $10 each and reduce ticket prices by $2 for each film of the season.
