Freewheel Cycle’s Freeskool allows kids to have fun, learn new skills and gain confidence while riding their bikes.
The non-competitive kids bike club began about 12 years ago and was initially meant for ages 12 and up, said Freewheel Cycle owner Wendy Hall. Back then, the kids used to go travelling on different bike adventures.
“We went to Panorama probably five or six years in a row and camped and went downhill mountain biking,” she said.
Over the years, younger riders began to participate in Freeskool and now “the biggest group is the four and five-year-olds.”
Dedicated volunteer coaches, Freewheel Cycle staff, and parents accompany the mini shredders during their weekly group ride. Biking adventures are tailored to the different age groups, and there’s time set aside for snacks, which the kids tote in their backpacks.
Freeskool runs every Saturday at 11 a.m. until mid-September.
