Jasper’s green thumbs got together March 15 to spread a little gardening knowledge to anyone willing to listen.

Seedy Saturday, hosted by the Jasper Local Food Society, was a chance for gardening enthusiasts to buy seeds, become a member of the society, or simply talk to other gardeners as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“It’s a chance to think about something green,” one club member said to an inquiring tourist.

The event took place at the SnowDome Coffee Bar. In the afternoon, about a dozen people lounged in the shop’s leather chairs as local plant-lover Gord Ruddy gave a presentation on how to read seed packages.

As home baking was passed around, Ruddy lectured on the importance of identifying a plant’s Latin name, why organic seeds aren’t that important, and how to avoid growing a “consumptive” garden.

He also fielded questions on restoring proper pH balance to soil.

“I always say it takes 40 years to get perfect soil, so start gardening in your 20s,” he joked.

With warm weather making short work of a winter’s worth of snow, many gardeners are eager to get their hands dirty. While it didn’t replace kneeling in the earth, Seedy Saturday was no doubt an acceptable substitute—at least for now.
