The Breton Cougars six-a-side football team came to Jasper for the first round of provincial playoffs last Saturday. From the outset, the Cougars’ fast paced offense put the Glaciers on their heels and, ultimately the visitors went home victorious.

The Cougars fired off a successful onside kick-off to start the game and their offense took charge.

Quick passing plays and cross-field passes challenged the Glaciers’ defense, helping Breton take the lead early, never to look back.

Glaciers running back Brad Anselmo managed to break open for one touchdown run in the opening quarter, but the score was 40–6 after the first frame.

The second quarter saw little change as the high-tempo Breton offense found openings and continued to move the ball. The Glaciers did manage some offensive drives and Anselmo scored a second touchdown for the home team.

After making halftime adjustments, the Glaciers were able to stem some of the Cougar offense, containing their quarterback to a greater degree.

Jack Hilworth intercepted a Cougar pass attempt and ran the ball back to mid-field. Anselmo managed a third touchdown and quarterback Martin Kreiner, on a delayed draw play, also found the end zone for the Glaciers. The final score was Breton 88, Glaciers 26.

After a very successful regular season, the Glaciers were stung by a more experienced Breton squad.

The Cougars’ execution and adaptation to six-man strategy was evident throughout the game, as they dominated the time of possession.

Defensively, the Breton squad tackled well, shutting down the Glaciers running attack.

The Glaciers are done for the season after taking home the West Division Championship Banner. The team will hold its banquet on Nov. 27. Tickets can be purchased at École Desrochers.

The banquet is an opportunity to thank the many community businesses and organizations that supported the team this year, as well as an occasion to hand out player awards.
