Last Friday, the Hinton Wolfpak came to Jasper for a first-place showdown in the West division of the six-a-side football league and the Glaciers came away with their sixth straight victory.

The bigger Hinton team played hard and kept the score close in the early going.

On their opening possession, a running play went nowhere, so on second down the Glaciers took to the air. A quick pass to Jack Hilworth in the flat turned into a 92-yard touchdown reception.

After both teams went two and out, Hinton rebounded with a 68-yard quarterback sweep to the end zone. After a short kickoff attempt by the Wolfpak, Jasper went to the air again, this time to Emerson Ostrander for a 60-yard major to put the Glaciers up 16–6.

The Wolfpak returned the ensuing kickoff to the Glacier 18-yard line.

After a penalty against the Glaciers, the jumbo package for the Hinton squad ran the ball into the end zone.

The next drive saw the Glaciers running attack get rolling. Brad Anselmo ran 25 yards, Ostrander another 20 and finally Dylan Mooney reversed field to scamper into the end zone to bring the score to 24–14 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the defense take control. Both teams were unable to move the ball effectively and the Hinton passing game was picked off by Bryn Malcolm.

The Glaciers quarterback Martin Kreiner took to the air with success for a 48-yard touchdown strike to Ostrander.

Malcolm got his second interception on the ensuing Wolfpak drive only to see the Glaciers return the favour on the last play of the half with the score at 32–14.

Adjustments by the Glaciers at half time seemed to work. The air attack continued as Ostrander took a short pass in the flat, 75 yards to the end zone.

After the Jasper defense held strong, Jasper took the ball over again and after a 20-yard completion to Mooney, Kreiner found Ostrander deep in the secondary for a 68-yard touchdown play.

The Wolfpak took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. With momentum on their side, the Hinton squad forced the Glaciers to punt, took possession on the Jasper 38-yard line and ploughed their way to a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 46–28.

Defenses were strong in the fourth quarter until late when the Glaciers drove to the Wolfpak one-yard line, only to be foiled with a penalty call.

After taking possession of the ball, the Hinton quarterback ran 106 yards to score with less than a minute remaining in the game. Though the onside kick was not successful, the Glaciers were unable to gain a first down, giving the Hinton team one last play on offense. They took the ball 50 yards to score and bring the final score to 46–42 in favour of the home team.

The win closed out the regular season for the Glaciers, who hold a perfect record, as well as first place in the West division of the Alberta six-a-side football league and a number two ranking by Football Alberta.

The Glaciers’ first provincial playoff game will be in Jasper on Saturday, Nov. 9 against the 5th ranked Breton Cougars.
