It was payback time in Edson last Thursday, where the home team Rebels defeated the Jasper Glaciers with a last play touchdown in 2012. This year, the Glaciers scored in the last minute of the game to seal a 22–18 victory.
The Glaciers got off to a roaring start on their opening possession when Jack Hillworth romped 46 yards for a touchdown. On the very next possession, Jake Melanson connected with Martin Kreiner for a 25-yard catch and run to put the Glaciers up 14–0 and it looked like the game could turn into a route.
However, the second quarter saw Edson capitalize on Glacier miscues to storm back with two touchdowns of their own, drawing the score to 14–12 at the half.
The third quarter was filled with errors as both squads’ defensive sides created turnovers and offenses could not get on track. Edson took the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter running an option into the end zone from the five yard line.
The Glaciers got the ball back with 50 seconds on the clock and marched 60 yards down the field, capping the drive with a Martin Kreiner to Emerson Ostrander touchdown pass with 10 seconds left in the game. The defense held as the Rebels’ two Hail Mary passes fell incomplete, allowing the visitors to leave town with a win under their belts.
The win puts the Glaciers in a first place tie with the Hinton Wolfpack in the west division of the Alberta School Athletic Association’s Six-a-Side Football League, as well as being ranked sixth in the province by Football Alberta. The Glaciers’ home opener against the Sunchild Bisons will be on Friday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. on Centennial Field.
