Dear Editor,
It is undeniable that living in a national park comports responsibilities towards the environment as much as toward the people in our community. Since 2008 our bishop, Right Rev. Jane Alexander, has asked parishes to work around principles such as: love and compassion; transformation of unjust structures and dynamics in society; and the preservation of Creation (environment and nature).
No surprise then that when the Reuse it Centre was in need of a more affordable place to operate, our parish church took up the risk and challenge to make our basement available for this noble project at an affordable rent. Certainly we did not have to do this, yet in accordance with our mandate we should always strive to serve in all possible ways to the wider community, particularly those less fortunate who need furniture at an affordable price and whose income is greatly diminished seasonally, yet still have to pay full rent and eat three times a day.
Furthermore, being a parish in the middle of a national park calls us to contribute to the preservation of God’s Creation. One can see—based on the aforementioned points—that to support the Reuse it Centre within our limited resources comes as an integral part of our mission as a parish.
We only hope that all organizations, clubs and committed people of Jasper will follow suit and join with the municipal council and Park administration in a concerted effort to help the less fortunate of our community and at the same time preserve the environment and natural beauty God has given us to enjoy.
