Cruisin’ for charity

For every A&W Teen Burger sold today, Aug. 22, $1 will be donated to the MS Society of Canada.

The money raised through the Cruisin’ for a Cause campaign supports leading-edge MS research and community programs and services.

Last year, the campaign raised $1.4 million. The hope is this year, the campaign’s fifth, will exceed that number.

Jasper’s Greg Van Tighem, who’s in the middle of his own campaign to raise $93,000 for the society, will also be at the A&W that day washing cars and bikes.

Motor around the park

The fifth annual Jasper Motorcycle Run is this Saturday, Aug. 24.

The event will see participants ride from the townsite to Maligne Lake, down to Sunwapta Falls, north past Athabasca Falls, up to Marmot Basin and back down again to the De’d Dog.

The ride is a poker run, so at each location the participant will receive a playing card to add to their hand and at the end, the riders with the best three hands will win spectacular prizes.

On Friday, Some Irish Pirates will be performing at the De’d Dog, where late riders can also register for the following day’s poker run.

On Saturday night, there will be an after party at the Jasper Legion. That’s where the best poker hands will be announced and prizes will be awarded. That evening there will also be live music.

Every year a different charity is selected to receive the funds raised through registration fees.

This year the proceeds will go to Greg Van Tighem’s End to End to End MS campaign, which is currently at about $60,000. His goal is to reach $93,000 by the end of September.

Three short films

The National Film Board Film Club is back for its monthly presentation, this time showing three separate films.

Here and the Great Elsewhere is a playfully philosophical tale in which a man ponders the meaning of life. Unheralded is about a resilient little independent newspaper in tiny Lakefield, Ont. and The Portrait is about artist Phil Richard, who is commissioned to create Canada’s official portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee.

All three films are short in nature and free to view at the Seniors’ Lounge in the Activity Centre, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.

The film board screenings are organized by the Jasper Municipal Library.
