A fire in the Zamboni room at the Jasper arena has left the facility temporarily closed.

The fire started at 2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. As of press time, the cause was yet to be determined, as was the extent of the damage, which the municipality is calling extensive.

Although the arena is closed, the rest of the activity centre remains open and operational.

Earlier this week, municipal staff was working with inspectors and insurance adjusters to determine both the cause and the extent of the damage.

Wrapping up another JinJ

The final weekend of Jasper in January events begins tomorrow, Jan. 31.

Remaining on the agenda are a number of events, including Hops and Scotch Friday night at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre and Wine in Winter at the Chateau Jasper. There will also be live music at the Athabasca Hotel, with Tupelo Honey playing the night away.

On Saturday, the fun continues with Avalanche Awareness Days at Marmot Basin, the Winter Pentathlon at Pyramid Lake, Brewery Tours at the Jasper Brew Pub and two live bands in the evening, Tupelo Honey again at the Athabasca Hotel and Pascal Lecours and the Bad Characters at the Ded Dog, as well as star gazing at Pyramid Island with Parks Canada intepretors.

The final day of the festival, Sunday, Feb. 2, will include brewery tours, a free showing of the new animated film, Epic at the Chaba Theatre and a wrap up party at the Ded Dog.

Get involved

The municipality has numerous volunteer board and committee positions available and is currently accepting applications to fill the vacancies.

The positions are on the Greenspace Advisory Committee, the Community and Family Services Board and the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee.

To find an application form, visit the town website at jasper-alberta.com. From then find town hall and click committees and boards. The forms are also available in the municipal administration office located at 303 Pyramid Lake Road.

Online petition to stop exploitation of JNP

With Parks Canadas decision looming on Maligne Tours proposal to develop overnight accommodation at Maligne Lake, a petition popped up on Avaaz.org Tuesday, asking people to act now to stop the exploitation of Jasper National Park.

As of press time, nearly 300 people had signed the petition, which is addressed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

Avaaz, an organization that promotes political activism online, was also used ahead of the decision on the Glacier Skywalk, garnering more than 180,000 signatures on a petition to Save Jasper National Park.
