Petro increases diesel output
Petro Canada—the only station in town to offer diesel fuel—is renovating, and by the end of the month there will be five diesel pumps at the station, instead of just one.
To ensure visitors and locals have access to diesel throughout the renovations, one pump is open for use.
George Samaris, who operates the station, said Petro Canada made the decision to increase the number of diesel pumps because of the high volume of fuel sold at the location.
Back in 2012, when Mountain Esso closed—leaving Petro Canada as the only remaining station with a diesel pump—there was a great deal of concern from business owners and tourism officials about the accessibility of the fuel.
Samaris said he thinks the renovation will alleviate some of those concerns.
“It should help the town out, and it should be a good thing for the community.â€
In the meantime, until renovations are complete, the town is down to two regular gas stations, the Avalanche Esso and the Petro Canada on the west end of town.
Artists find two new homes
The Jasper Artist Guild has set up shop in two new locations and is opening the doors to both Friday, June 13.
The first location is the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives and the second is in the Clock Tower Mall, adjacent to the guild’s former location, which is now part of Jasper Rock and Jade.
The guild has been in numerous locations since moving out of its long-time home in the Old Fire Hall in 2012, in anticipation of the completion of the library and cultural centre, which is now 17 months overdue.
Safety fair this weekend
If you’ve never had a ride in a fire truck, now’s your chance.
On Saturday, June 14 the Jasper Fire Department is hosting its annual Community Safety Fair and one of the activities is hopping in the engine for a tour of the town.
The event also boasts exhibits from Parks Canada, ATCO Gas, HIV West Yellowhead, Victim Services and many other local agencies and non-profits, and there’s a barbecue, with proceeds going toward the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Emergency Services Building, and everyone’s invited.
Telephone scam
A Jasper senior is warning the community to beware of telephone scammers.
On June 10, Norma McLean was woken up by a phone call at about 7 a.m. On the other end was a woman claiming to be from Windows Service Centre. The woman asked McLean to go to her computer and to follow along with her step-by-step instructions.
When McLean refused and asked the woman for a phone number to reach her at, the salesperson gave her a fake number, and later hung up on her.
McLean said the woman was very convincing and was after her personal information.
