Legion hosts Festivus
Tired of the holiday season already? Got something you need to get off your chest? Maybe you just want to test your strength in an arm wrestle with a friendly foe?
If this is you, don’t worry. The Jasper Royal Canadian Legion totally gets it—that’s why it’s hosting Festivus, the annual parody holiday made famous by the American sitcom Seinfeld.
The secular holiday, celebrated annually on Dec. 23, pokes fun at the commercialization of the holiday season through some rather peculiar traditions, including, of course, the unadorned aluminum Festivus pole, instead of a tree.
Not to be outdone by Christmas, Festivus just wouldn’t be Festivus without a delicious meatloaf dinner and some holiday miracles, including the time-honoured tradition of publicly airing grievances and competing in feats of strength.
There will also be an open jam, so bring your voices and your instruments.
The party gets going, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be $15.
JSHS hosts international volleyball match
The Jasper Junior/Senior High School (JJSHS) is inviting locals to an international volleyball match between the University of Alberta’s Golden Bears and the men’s team from Lewis University in Illinois.
The match is being held at JJSHS’ gymnasium at 7 p.m., Dec. 29, and promises to be an exciting match of high-calibre volleyball.
There is no charge for admission but donations are welcome. Funds raised will help offset the cost of hosting. Donations will also be used to help fund JJSHS’ girls’ volleyball team’s trip to California for a tournament next October.
