‘Stay tuned’ for Maligne Tours decision

Parks Canada hopes to release its decision on Maligne Tours’ conceptual proposal in the coming weeks.

According to Shawn Cardiff, manager of integrated land use planning for Jasper National Park, Maligne Tours has just completed its review of public feedback and it is doing final checks on its proposal before submitting it in its final state.

Maligne Tours is proposing to construct a 66-room heritage style hotel at Maligne Lake.

Parks employees are currently comparing Maligne Tours’ public engagement report to what the agency heard from the public.

Once the company completes its final conceptual proposal, Parks will review it and determine what aspects of the proposal it approves of, if any. Then the project will move on to the next phase: a detailed proposal and environmental assessment.

“Stay tuned,” said Cardiff.

Seedy Saturday returns

With the temperatures rising and the snow melting, Jasper’s green thumbs have turned their attention to another season of growth, and they’re hoping the community might join them.

This Saturday, March 15, the Local Food Society is inviting Jasperites to the SnowDome Coffee Bar for its annual Seedy Saturday event. The event will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and will include information about the community garden and a seed, pot and garden tool exchange. There will also be seeds available for purchase.

1920s style bonspiel

It’s the ladies’ turn to hit the rink. This weekend, March 14–16, 24 teams from as far away as Kamloops and Edmonton, will descend upon Jasper for the annual Ladies Bonspiel.

In celebration of the Jasper Curling Club’s 90th anniversary, the theme for the event is the Roaring 20s. So, as well as throwing rocks, the curlers will be getting into costume on Saturday night to party the night away in true flapper style.

The championship game will take place Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m.

Successful canvas for charity

After knocking on doors during the month of February, a group of about 20 Jasperites raised nearly $4,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Leo Arsenault, the zone leader for Jasper, has been canvasing for the foundation for the last six years.

He said he is grateful to the volunteers who took the time to join him in canvasing the town and to the community members who were generous enough to give.
