For those looking to hit the slopes, you won’t have to wait much longer.

Brian Rode, vice-president of marketing for Marmot Basin, confirmed the ski hill will open on Nov. 23.

“We weren’t sure for a bit there, but we will be skiing and snowboarding soon,” Rode said. “We need a little bit more natural snow before we can open all the runs and lifts, but it’s still November and things are coming along nicely.”

He said several runs and two lifts will be operating on opening day.

The hill was originally slated to open Nov. 11, but was forced to bump back its opening day due to unseasonably warm temperatures.

During the past few days colder weather has allowed the ski hill to start making snow, however, Rode said it just wasn’t enough to open on Nov. 18.

“If we had of gotten this cold weather a few days ago then I think it would have been possible. If it stays cold during the day then we can make snow around the clock, but we also want to have the snow groomed and the routes in good shape,” said Rode.

“The upper mountain is coming along really well, but right now we’re really focused on the lower mountain.”

Police chase ends with court date

After a brief police chase, a 24-year-old man from Edmonton is facing several charges including impaired driving.

According to Jasper RCMP, police were on a routine foot-patrol near the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre when officers came across two men who were allegedly drunk on Nov. 9. According to police, the two men had been kicked out of the hotel’s bar for being belligerent and aggressive to other customers.

The two men left the bar on foot, but police were soon told that the same two men were seen driving a vehicle.

RCMP officers located the vehicle and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly sped away to try and evade the police.

A pursuit ensued, but ended shortly when the vehicle reached a dead end on Cottonwood Creek Road.

According to the RCMP, the two suspects fled on foot, but were quickly caught after a brief foot pursuit.

The 24-year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police and obstruction to a peace officer. He was also charged for possessing cannabis resin. The 25-year-old passenger, who was also from the Edmonton area, was charged with obstruction to a peace officer.

Both are set to appear in Jasper Provincial Court on Jan. 12. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
