Food society seeks Parks approval

Members of the Jasper Local Food Society appeared before the Planning and Development Advisory Committee last week, seeking a positive recommendation for the use of the McCready Centre parking lot for this summer’s farmer’s markets.

The society has already received support from the municipality, which approved a one-year pilot project, allowing the society to have 10 weekly markets between June and September.

The parking lot is currently zoned institutional, and within its zoning, community recreation facilities and public assemblies are permitted.

The advisory committee, which heard the society’s request on April 24, is required to submit its recommendation to the superintendent of Jasper National Park within seven days of the hearing. The decision is then put in the hands of the superintendent, who has 15 working days to notify the applicant.

Jasperites on provincial tourism council

Mike Day, owner Evil Dave’s Grill, has been appointed to the Alberta Strategic Tourism Council, along with Doug McPhee, who is returning to the council as vice-chair.

McPhee is the owner of Avalanche Spirits and Hertz, and he is also the past president of Jasper Tourism and Commerce.

The tourism council has 17 members, representing the tourism industry across the province.

Its role is to provide Richard Starke, minister of tourism, parks and recreation, with strategic direction for the implementation of Alberta’s Tourism Framework—a framework that seeks to turn the province’s tourist trade into a $10.3 billion industry by 2020.

Thrift shop fashion show

For the second year in a row, volunteers of the United Church Thrift Shop are inviting the community to drink tea, eat dessert and watch as they strut their stuff in treasures from their very own racks.

The Thrift Shop Fashion show is May 3, and all of the clothing items that grace the catwalk will be up for auction to the highest bidder.

The show will begin at 2 p.m. Entrance is by donation, with all proceeds going to the ultrasound fund, administered by the Jasper Ladies Hospital Auxiliary.
