Vote on joint tourism study

Council held a special meeting, Nov. 26, to vote on whether to apply for a provincial grant with the towns of Canmore and Banff to undertake the Competitive Tourism Communities Project.

The proposed evidence-based research project would, if completed, define the specific cost of infrastructure and resources to support a tourism community and how that differs from a traditional municipality.

The three municipalities discussed the study with the Minister of Municipal Affairs during the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association conference in Calgary earlier this month, and then decided to jointly apply for the grant—which has an application deadline of Nov. 30.

During Tuesday’s meeting, council unanimously voted in favour of submitting a joint application. If the application is denied, there are no funds in the current budget to undertake such a study.

Bazaar raises funds for typhoon relief

The Jasper United Church is hosting its annual Christmas Tea, Bake Sale and Bazaar at the McCready Centre, Dec. 4.

All donations given at the door will be sent to the Haiyan Relief Fund, to support the people who have been displaced following the typhoon in the Philippines.

Following the Nov. 2 typhoon, 1.9 million people were left homeless and more than 600,000 were displaced.

In an effort to show support to the people of the Philippines, many Jasperites and groups in the community have organized events to raise money for the relief fund.

Already, a bake sale and bottle drive have been held. Following the bazaar on Wednesday, there will also be a benefit concert at the Atha-B on Dec. 6 and a two-day pre-Christmas Filipino bazaar in the Catholic Church Hall Dec. 7 and 8.

Local KOA celebrated

For receiving the highest score in customer service from its campers, the Hinton/Jasper KOA Campground was recognized with the 2014 KOA President’s and Founder’s Award by Kampgrounds of America Inc., Nov. 21.

KOA surveys hundreds of thousands of campers each year regarding their KOA camping experiences and it also conducts annual quality reviews. Based on both, the Hinton/Jasper KOA Campground was selected for the award, which is named in honour of Dave Drum, the founder of KOA.
