Halloween fright fest
If you’re faint of heart, tonight’s haunted house is not for you. But if you like a good scare, grab a twoonie from your piggy bank and head to the spooky spectacle at 115 Patricia St.
The haunted house is a fundraiser for the Right to Read Society, a non-profit group of parents, teachers and individuals who promote literacy in Jasper.
The house will be open to visitors between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., Oct. 31.
Closed for renovations
If all goes as planned, the Amethyst Lodge will undergo a major renovation both inside and out.
The Connaught Drive hotel closed mid-October and will remain that way until summer 2014, in order for the overhaul to take place.
In April 2012, Mountain Park Lodges, the owner of the 97-room lodge, proposed a complete demolition and redevelopment of the hotel. That proposal was denied by Parks Canada after the Planning and Development Advisory Committee recommended the agency deny the proposed variances that would be necessary for the redevelopment.
MPL is now waiting on building permits to instead renovate the entire hotel.
Engaged Jasperites
On an average day, the municipality’s website tallies 150 unique visitors.
But on Oct. 21 the site had nearly seven times that many unique visitors—1,000—and a total of 6,000 page views. Those views and visits are undoubtedly the result of engaged Jasperites hitting refresh time and time again to see the results of the municipal election.
Some of those people were watching from the Activity Centre lobby, others from an iPad in the De’d Dog Bar and Grill and others still from their home computers and smartphones.
“Come Write In” at the library
In celebration of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the Jasper Municipal Library is hosting “Come Write In” nights on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
NaNoWriMo is a writing event that has writers pledge to write 50,000 words within the month of November. The novel has to be a brand new work that is written from start to finish within 30 days.
The event has no judges or prizes. It’s just a challenge.
During the library’s writing sessions last year, bloggers, journalists, poets and short story writers took advantage of the refreshments, encouragement and help with registration for NaNoWriMo.
For more information, contact the library at [email protected].
Funds for schools
U-R Building Knowledge, a Jasper-based non-profit organization, is hosting its annual fundraising gala Nov. 7 at the Jasper Legion.
The gala includes a gourmet Indian dinner prepared by Chef Sushant Shanbhag of Tekarra Dining Room, live music from Dunster’s Samson’s Delilah and a silent auction.
The funds raised will support the construction and furnishing of schools in Myanmar—the country formerly known as Burma.
To date, U-R Building Knowledge, founded by Gilly Thomas and Sandra Hodge, has built five schools and contributed to many others in rural Myanmar.
The Myanmar Education Gala begins at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 7.
Tickets are available at Coco’s Cafe and Wild Orchid Salon and Spa.
