Tourism Jasper names CEO
Mary Darling can finally remove “acting” from her title, as she is officially the new CEO of Tourism Jasper.
Darling has been leading the marketing agency since the departure of Maggie Davison in March, but it wasn’t until last week that she officially took the title, along with the role.
Previous to being acting CEO, Darling was the executive director of business development for the organization.
As CEO she will oversee Tourism Jasper’s marketing strategy and business position and she will continue to develop the organization’s shareholder base.
Darling said she’s “absolutely thrilled to be leading the Tourism Jasper team as CEO, to be part of a passionate community and representing such a beautiful destination.”
Wallace reigning champ
For the second year in a row, Jasper’s own Cory Wallace came out on top at the Mongolia Bike Challenge.
The grueling 10-day bike race is one that Wallace has competed in for the past three years, the first ending in a second place finish.
This year he completed the race in 25 hours, 45 minutes and 24 seconds, a total of 23 minutes and 21 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Antonio Ortiz Barranco of Spain.
This has been a particularly successful season for Wallace, who just came off a win at the Canadian Marathon Championships in Quebec and another at the High Cascades (HC) 100.
Pride AGM
The brand new Jasper Pride Festival Society, which launched this summer, is holding its first annual general meeting Sept. 18.
The society was formed in order for the Jasper Pride Weekend to grow and flourish, ensuring that the fifth annual event is bigger and better than ever this March.
The meeting, at the Jasper Legion, is open to anyone interested in joining the society or helping plan the weekend-long event.
Following the meeting, which will start at 7 p.m., there will be a kick-off celebration, complete with music by DJ Guy.
Memberships will be available at the door.
Biggest ride in Jasper
Have you been itching to hop on your bike and blast out into the mountains before the snow? Sept. 15 is the perfect opportunity.
The Jasper Park Cycling Association Road Ride sets out Sunday, and all riders are welcome.
There will be three separate rides—a 50 km, 100 km and 160 km—all rolling out from Lake Annette at 9 a.m. and cruising along Maligne Road.
Don’t worry if you get peckish, either, because there will be a couple of food stations along the way. Or you could just wait for the post-ride social, where there will be food, drinks and prizes.
For anyone interested in testing his or her fitness alongside other experienced or novice riders, registration is at 8:30 a.m. in the first parking lot at Lake Annette. It’s free for JPCA members and $10 for everyone else.
The ride will happen rain or shine.
