Council wage review
Retired town manager George Krefting has been tasked with reviewing council’s remuneration.
It is council policy to do such a review prior to each election.
“Mr. Krefting, who is familiar with the operations, has been asked to do that and will report back,” said Mayor Richard Ireland.
If there are to be changes, they will come into effect immediately after the election.
Years of service recognized
For his 20 years of service to Jasper, Fire Chief Greg Van Tighem was recognized with an Exemplary Service Award.
He was to receive it during a banquet with the Lieutenant Governor, but was unable to attend, so it was presented to him by Mayor Richard Ireland during the Sept. 10 council meeting.
“I think it’s really more appropriate to do this at home, where Greg is most appreciated, not only bycouncil, but by the entire community,” he said, as he passed over a plaque and medal of recognition.
Following the presentation, Van Tighem said, “It’s been an honour to serve Jasper for 20 years.”
Animation celebration
With help from staff at the Jasper Municipal Library, anyone can become an animated filmmaker.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, from 5–8 p.m., the library will be an animation classroom, complete with iPads, craft supplies for set-building and areas for on-location filming.
The completed films will be premiered in late October and then put on YouTube, with the promise that “You’ll be wearing dark glasses and signing autographs by Christmas.”
Submissions are due Oct. 21. For those who want to make them at home, the library suggests using the National Film Board’s PixStop app because it’s free and intuitive. The app is designed for ages 10 and up.
The library’s focus on animation is a lead up to International Animation Day, Oct. 28.
Judges celebrate excellence
Jasperites received special recognition last week from Evelyn Alemanni and Steve Preston, who judged Jasper in the international Communities in Bloom competition in July.
The recognition came in the form of certificates presented during the Sept. 10 council meeting.
Recognized for their contribution to the community and for keeping the town beautiful were Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, the Parish of St. Mary and St. George, the Jasper Local Food Society and Annelies Laggner.
Although they weren’t mentioned by name, Mayor Richard Ireland also thanked the Communities in Bloom Committee.
“They don’t get one of these awards, but they absolutely deserve one,” he said. “The whole crew is spectacular and they have been for years.”
Jasper won the national Communities in Bloom competition in 2012 and is now competing on the international stage.
The results of this year’s competition will be announced Oct. 26 in Ottawa-Gatineau.
