Ladybug
Iām a bug, Iām proud to be.
I have six legs, as you can see.
Iāve a handsome coat: black spots on red.
Iāve two antennae on my head.
But Iām a boy; my name is Doug
So why do they call me ladybug?!
Fifteen years ago, between feedings and changings, Jasperite Moira McKinnon wrote a childrenās book.
āI started writing these poems when I was changing diapers,ā she said, referring to the 26 playful poems featured in her self-published book Awesome Ants and Lady Bugs in Pants.
McKinnon resurrected her A to Z book of bugsāwhich landed on the back burner when she returned to work, following her maternity leaveāwith the help of local graphic designer Gladzy Kei Zuniga.
McKinnon had her daughter contact Zuniga five months ago and ever since, sheās been glued to her computer, waiting for the next bug illustration to grace her email.
āI would come home from work and check my computer and there would be a new bug. That was always really exciting,ā she said.
Even more exciting, though, was to see the finished product.
āItās so fantastic to have it. It was really exciting to get it and see it in book form.ā
The book includes a poem for each letter of the alphabet, and each one is about bugs.
McKinnon will be selling the book, of which she has 600 copies, in select stores in town, including the Friends of Jasper National Park gift shop, Bearfoot in the Park and the Candy Bearsā Lair.
She will also be holding a book launch and signing at the information centre Saturday, Nov. 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event includes bug-themed goodies and a costume contest for the best bug.
Although this book is hot off the presses, McKinnon said she already has an idea for her next one, although sheās not yet ready to share it.
āIf I can break even on this one, Iāll do another one,ā she said.
