The Jasper Junior/Senior High School’s junior girls volleyball team captured its first championship banner since 1996, Saturday, Nov. 2.
The girls went undefeated through five round robin games against teams from Hinton, Edson and Niton Junction.
In the semi-final, the team stepped up and smashed through the Niton Knights in two quick sets. In the other semi-final, Edson’s Holy Redeemer School upset Hinton’s Harry Collinge team in a nail biter of a game.
The final was set: Jasper Cougars versus Holy Redeemer. As similar to most finals, this was the most exciting game of the tournament, with great play from both teams.
The exceptional leadership of captains Taylore Czorny and Maggie McKenney combined with great sets from Jenna Sillence and spikes and digs from Nicole Frechette, Jacquie Proc and Sophie Koleman led to a victory in two sets.
The team is now preparing for the Nov. 19 Grande Yellowhead regional finals in Edson, where the team hopes to capture another championship title.
