Jian Ghomeshi’s top five

In WestJet’s Up! magazine, CBC’s Jian Ghomeshi highlighted the Jasper Legion in his top five venues to see a concert.

The Legion appears alongside the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Calif., Massey Hall in Toronto, Ont., Bowery Ballroom in New York City, N.Y. and West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, Man.

Ken Kuzminski, president of the Legion, happens to be a huge Ghomeshi fan and is beside himself with excitement.

This is Ghomeshi’s second time promoting the Legion, having mentioned it on the radio two years ago, following his visit to the venue in 2011, when he was in Jasper to speak during the Alberta Library Conference at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

Minister celebrates dark skies

Richard Starke, minister of tourism, parks and recreation, will be in Jasper with Robin Campbell, MLA for West Yellowhead, today, Oct. 24, to take part in the Dark Sky Festival.

Starke and Campbell will also be meeting with Tourism Jasper, the municipality and the Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce.

Police seeking assistance

The RCMP are seeking assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for a number of incidents that have taken place over the past two weeks.

The most recent was the theft of a tax lamp from the top of a cab. The light was stolen in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 18, while the van was parked on Connaught Drive.

On Oct. 16 or 17, during the night, the glass in the front door of Lucia’s Gem was smashed.

And on Oct. 14, between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., a fire was started at the Maligne Lodge, in the swimming pool area. Witnesses reported that three young women, between 18 and 20 years old, were seen in the area.

The police are seeking the public’s assistance in all three cases.

People with information are encouraged to contact the Jasper RCMP at 780-852-4421 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Movie change

The Jasper Municipal Library will be showing Buying Sex for the monthly National Film Board presentation, Oct. 30.

Originally the library had planned to show Stories We Tell, but that film was shown during the Jasper Film Club season last year. Rather than replay it, the library decided to change the film.

Buying Sex is about prostitution laws in Canada and how they are being challenged by pro-prostitution and anti-prostitution forces.

The film will appear in the Senior’s Lounge in the Jasper Activity Centre at 7 p.m.
