Brittany Grant, who works at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s Emerald Lounge, donated all of her tips to Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation on Nov. 14.

During her six-hour shift she collected $161 for the cause.

“It was a relatively slow day, but it was still good and there’s always next time,” Grant said.

In August, Grant’s boyfriend, Jason Ringstad became an uncle to a baby girl. Shortly after birth, Ringstad’s niece was diagnosed with Down syndrome and it was determined she would need heart surgery by the time she was five months old.

The upcoming surgery will take place at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

“I don’t really want recognition or anything like that. I’m just trying to help out and make people aware of all the good things the Stollery Hospital does for children,” Grant said.

She first advertised her idea on the Jasper Buy, Sell and Trade Facebook page on the evening of Nov. 8. Within a few hours, her post had received more than 100 likes and several supportive comments.

“When I saw the reaction I was almost in tears because of the support. I didn’t expect that at all,” she said. “I was expecting maybe a couple of likes ... I feel overwhelmed by the positivity.”

Grant said she got the idea from her sister who works at a restaurant in Ontario. Earlier this year, Grant’s sister donated a day’s worth of tips to cancer research.

“It was successful for her and it inspired me to want to do the same thing for the Stollery,” Grant said.

Grant said she’s hoping to do another tip-raising fundraiser in the future.
