Seven members of the Jasper Freeride Freestyle Ski Team competed in the Alberta Winter Games earlier this month and two skied away with medals.

In the slopestyle competition, Caitlin McInnis won bronze, while Alex Krushell won bronze in the moguls.

Along with McInnis and Krushell, Chance Beck, Aiden Leder, Marshall Begon, Benjamin Lemaris and Hunter Boyer competed in the games.

All our athletes did awesome, even though some had little freestyle competition experience, said Freeride coach Phillippe Mondou, who travelled to Norquay with the skiers.

Saje Rayner of the Jasper Ski Team was also in attendance, competing in the slalom and giant slalom events.

The Alberta Winter Games are a celebration of youth sports, bringing together young athletes between the ages of 11 and 17 to compete in 19 winter sports. This year, the alpine skiing and freestyle skiing competitions were held at Norquay, with the remaining events taking place in the Banff and Canmore area.

The next winter games will be held in 2016. Mondou said the Freeride team is looking forward to bringing even more athletes to the games in the future, as the team is continuing to grow and training resources are continuing to improve and expand in Jasper. Some of those improvements include a full mogul course, a roller course and an airbag, all at Marmot Basin.

The athletes are also now training during the summer on water ramps and on a trampoline with Freeride head coach, Nic Bazin.
