Parks Canada interpreter wins Award for “rockin’” theatre program
Sought after by interpreters across the country, Interpretation Canada’s annual awards recognize excellence in cultural, natural and historical interpretation.
Recently, local park interpreter Leanne Standing was recognized with a Bronze Award for developing Geology Rocks, a performance that took the stage last summer at Whistlers Outdoor Theatre.
This highly entertaining learning program features a dry, nerdy geologist (Dr. Sandy Crystal) and an exciting, energetic rock ‘n roll star (Slate Rockwell) who, through hilarious banter, discover how geology and rock ‘n roll are similar.
They form a rock band, “the Standing Stones,” which gets kids of all ages involved in the fun of discovering that geology is like rock n’ roll; it has bass (or base, which refers to sedimentation), it’s uplifting (like mountain building) and it moves you (which relates to erosion).
When asked to create an interpretive program on the topic of geology, Leanne knew that it was going to be a challenging assignment. She took on the challenge wholeheartedly and came up with a winner. When congratulated, Leanne responded humbly, “I do believe congrats goes out to the entire interpretive team. So many people contributed. John Strugnell’s theatrical talent and stage energy, Ryan Bray’s stage performance coaching...and the support and encouragement from Brian Catto and Gloria Keyes-Brady are what made this program successful.”
