Wild Jasper has an international flavour next week as Scottish volunteers Jack Ward and Anna Hemmett present on their experiences working with Scotland’s Cairngorm Mountains reindeer herd. Jack and Anna will be in the park for two weeks to explore the mountains and volunteer their time in Jasper.
During the two weeks they will share their experiences in local schools and as part of the Wild Jasper series.
Why reindeer for a Wild Jasper presentation? Caribou and reindeer are the same species.
We will also include updates on this fall’s Jasper National Park caribou surveys.
Join us at the Jasper Legion on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
New caribou conservation actions in place
As of Nov. 1, delayed winter access is in effect for the ranges of the A La Peche (North Boundary), Brazeau (South Jasper) and Tonquin caribou herds in support of caribou conservation.
These areas can still be enjoyed after Feb. 28 (Feb. 16 in the Tonquin).
Help us protect Jasper’s threatened caribou by choosing other areas of the park for winter recreation until these dates.
By delaying winter access, Parks Canada is eliminating facilitated wolf access to caribou habitat. This is one of five key threats contributing to the decline of caribou in the mountain national parks.
Parks Canada is taking action to address all five threats. For more information visit: www. parkscanada.gc.ca/caribou.
