Enhanced winter recreation and caribou conservation in JNP
With winter just around the corner, it is time to put away the summer toys and get your winter gear tuned up. In Jasper, Parks Canada staff are doing just thatgetting trails, equipment and people ready for the winter season, as well as counting caribou for the annual fall survey.
As announced on July 26, new initiatives are being implemented to support both winter recreation and caribou conservation in Jasper National Park. The Decoigne (Highway 16 West) area will be added to the list of Jasper winter trails this year, and planning continues for future recreational offers in both this and the Pyramid Lake area.
To support caribou conservation gains, as of Nov. 1, winter access will be delayed annually until late February in the A La Peche, Brazeau and Tonquin caribou herd ranges.
To find out more about these initiatives, join us at the Jasper Legion tonight (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m. for updates and discussion. For more information, visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/jasper under Whats New or contact Shelley Bird, public outreach and education, at 780-852-6204.
