Visitors come to Jasper National Park to discover and appreciate breathtaking views of this gateway to nature, adventure and discovery. However, vandals have been tarnishing visitors’ experience by damaging five privis along Highway 16 and at Pyramid Lake and Lake Annette by taking a tree limb and ramming it directly into the toilet resulting in substantial damage. This has forced Parks Canada staff to close these important stops to make, in some cases, major repairs. The travelling public has an expectation of clean functioning facilities and repairs to these can take up to seven days to complete.

Other damage includes graffiti, which is a particular challenge in a national park setting. Graffiti found on rocks is usually dealt with by painting over using similar colours to the rock or by good old-fashioned elbow grease.

Parks Canada manages one of the finest and most extensive systems of protected natural and cultural heritage areas in the world and Canada’s national parks are a source of pride for Canadians and an integral part of our identity, they celebrate the beauty and infinite variety of our land.  Anything that damages them takes us a step back from our efforts to maintain them for future generations.

Parks Canada would like the public to keep an eye out for vandalism.  If you see anything out of the ordinary that involves damage to the park and its facilities please contact Parks Canada dispatch at 780-852-6155.
