Jasper’s newly-elected mayor and council swore oaths to diligently, faithfully and to the best of their abilities carry out their roles on town council, Oct. 29.

The swearing-in ceremony, officiated by Robin Campbell, MLA for West Yellowhead, drew a crowd of about 50 community members. Following the ceremony, and some mixing and mingling, council sat down for its organizational meeting to lay the groundwork for the next four years.

Following a unanimous decision, it was decided that, for now, meeting times will remain the same—1:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

The first regularly scheduled meeting of council was Nov. 5.

Meeting times can be changed in the future—for instance, to allow for an evening meeting— but that will require two weeks notice to the public.

Following a random draw last Tuesday, council also determined the order in which councillors will serve as deputy mayor. The role of deputy mayor is to fill in for Mayor Richard Ireland when he has a scheduling conflict.

Each councillor will hold the position for eight consecutive months at some point during their four-year council term.

The random draw generated the following order: Brian Nesbitt, Gilbert Wall, Dwain Wacko, Helen Kelleher-Empey, Vonna Arsenault and finally, Rico Damota.

The meeting also revealed what committees councillors will serve on. The appointments were made by the mayor. Ireland said he did his best to consider each person’s strengths when matching them with boards and committees.

In the end, there are two councillors—Wacko and Kelleher-Empey—with four appointments, while the rest have five.

If adjustments need to be made to the existing structure, Ireland said they will be discussed at the first committee of the whole meeting.
