Titchener talks at mountain safety night Mar. 2
Calling all mountain lovers.
On March 2 the Alpine Club of Canada and Jasper Life will be hosting a Mountain Safety Night to remind attendees that safety is paramount when enjoying the outdoors.
To get the message across, there will be several speakers including Ryan Titchener, a local rock climbing guide who was severely injured in Bugaboo Provincial Park last July.
Kerry McDonald, forecaster at Marmot Basin, will also present a synopsis of this year’s snowpack around the Marmot area and will dive into some avalanche incidents at or around Marmot over the years. He will also provide an overview of backcountry ski lines around Marmot.
Matt Knop, snow safety expert at Marmot Basin, will also be on hand to talk about the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association. Duke, the rescue dog that he works with, will also be in attendance.
Following the presentations there will be several door prizes up for grabs from Marmot Basin, Dana Hospitality, Fiddle River, Rockaboo Adventures and Avalanche Canada.
There will also be some complimentary finger foods available and time to socialize.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion. Admission is free.
Skatepark committee plans silent auction
The Jasper Skatepark Committee is hosting a silent auction on Feb. 26 to raise money for a new skateboard park.
The auction will take place at the Jasper Activity Centre in conjunction with the Community Dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In August, the municipality approved turning the current skatepark, located between the tennis courts and the high school, into a permanent state-of-the-art concrete skatepark.
Habitat hosts chocolate cake contest
So you think you have the best chocolate cake recipe?
Let the people decide.
On Feb. 27 Habitat for the Arts is inviting the public to sample a variety of home made chocolate cakes.
The rules are simple. Cakes must be a single layer and incorporate some type of chocolate; icing is optional. Those who are inept at baking are still invited to attend.
The hour-long event begins at 7 p.m. and costs $2.
