A 35-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after an off-duty police officer with the Edson RCMP detachment was struck and killed while riding his bike on July 5.
The RCMP identified the officer as Const. Austin Edwards MacDougall. He was struck west of Edson and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"All flags at Edson facilities will be lowered to half-mast out of respect for this member and those affected by this tragedy," read a statement from the local municipality.
"The Town of Edson sends condolences to his family and to the RCMP detachment."
According to police, MacDougall was riding his bike around 9 p.m. on Range Road 181 when he was struck.
Justin Lyle Jensen, of Yellowhead County, has been charged with impaired driving causing death and refusal to comply with a demand of a peace officer.
He has been released on bail with conditions to appear in Edson Provincial Court on July 18 at 10:00 am.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
