Dear Editor,
National Parks Act says what? The recent article “Hanging fruit could mean dead bears” was very informative, however, comments by senior park manager John Wilmshurst are very troubling. “People have to remember they live in Jasper, it’s an area set aside for wildlife and so we have to bias our management decisions to benefit the wildlife.” Section 4(1) of the National Parks Act says, “The National Parks of Canada are hereby dedicated to the people of Canada for their benefit, education and enjoyment, subject to this act and the regulations, and the parks shall be maintained and made use of so as to leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Now that is what the parks are for and why they were created. For a senior manager at Parks’ Canada in our employ to be misstating the national parks true purpose, as previously stated in the national parks act, that signals the need for all senior managers to review and understand the act.
