Dylan Dekker pitched three brilliant innings for the lopsided win in game one. Dekker did not allow a hit for his solid work. St. Albert scored one run in the first three innings. The Bears’ pitcher struck out eight Cardinals and walked four batters. Cole Borrow pitched the final two innings for Jasper.

The Bears picked up 16 hits in the opener, finishing off the Cardinals in five innings. Everett Pelz led the offense with four hits and Eric MacMahon and Kelan Polard added three hits each. Dekker and Tristan Erb-Beauchamp contributed to the attack with two hits a piece, while Borrow and Baden Koss each chalked up one.

Game two was an exciting seesaw battle with the lead exchanged on two different occasions.

Pelz earned his first pitching win in relief of starter Erb-Beauchamp. Pelz took the mound in the third inning with the Bears trailing by an 8-7 score. The right-hander held the Cardinals to four runs, striking out four batters. Polard closed the game in the final two innings by not allowing a run and giving up one hit.

Polard also made the defensive play of the game by catching a line drive and beating a Cardinal to second base for an unassisted double play. The gem came in the fourth inning while Polard was playing shortstop.

Sebastian Golla led the Bears’ 19-hit attack with a 5-for-5 performance at the plate. Golla had three doubles and two singles. MacMahon, Borrow and Polard each had three hits and Jesse Kertesz-Knight added a pair. Duncan McLeod had one hit and drew three walks. Koss, Erb-Beauchamp and Dekker contributed one hit each.

Golla was also outstanding behind the plate for Jasper, catching the entire game for the Bears for the first time.

In other baseball action, the Jasper Mosquito team faced the White Sox in a doubleheader in Spruce Grove. The Bears dropped a 12-11 decision after giving up three in the bottom of the sixth in game one. They lost game two by a score of 22-3. The young players faced the toughest pitchers they’ve seen so far this season and gained a lot from the experience.

Gage Leblanc and Dexter Fawcett shared the pitching duties in the first game and Jake Kertesz-Knight and Nash Hilworth took turns catching for Jasper.

Kertesz-Knight led the Bears’ offense in game one with three runs, while Dexter Fawcett and Keaton Schaefer each scored twice. Donovan Fawcett belted a triple for Jasper and Kertesz-Knight, Hilworth and Schaefer all hit singles.

Hilworth was Jasper’s starting pitcher for game two. Matthieu Marchand took the mound next for the first time in his career and struck out Spruce Grove’s top hitter. The Bears’ back catchers in game two were Kertesz-Knight and Callum Campbell.

Mac Carmichael, Kertesz-Knight and Dexter Fawcett each scored a run for Jasper. Rowan Koss displayed mental toughness by not backing down during his last at-bat against a White Sox fireballer. Defensive highlights included excellent plays by Dylan Gerwatoski and Schaefer at third, Carmichael snagging a fly ball, and Thomas Leclerc catching a fast moving ball at second.

Both baseball teams will close out the season in Jasper with doubleheaders on Oct. 1. The Pee Wee Bears face another St. Albert squad while the Mosquito Bears host Spruce Grove’s #2 team. Game times are set for 12 and 3 p.m. at Centennial Park.
