For the sixth year in a row, Oka Sushi’s “chopstick locker” program raised funds to donate to local community organizations.

This year, the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives and the Jasper Ladies Hospital Auxiliary were the recipients, each receiving $1,225.

The funds are raised by collecting money from customers who keep their own personal pairs of hand-decorated Japanese chopsticks in one of the 60 lockers at the sushi bar located at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Sushi chef Tatsuhiko Okazaki, his wife Rieko Okazaki and their employees Katrina Turcot and JoAnn Black presented the cheque to members of the museum and the ladies auxiliary April 11.

During the presentation at the museum, Karen Byers, the museum manager, thanked the Okazaki’s and presented them with an apron with the museum’s logo embroidered on the front as a token of the museum’s appreciation.

Byers said the funds will go toward the day-to-day operations of the museum.

The funds presented to the hospital auxiliary will go toward the portable ultrasound machine the community has been fundraising for the last few months.
