Six of Jasper’s U16 ski racers made the trek to Apex Mountain Resort in Penticton, B.C. last month to compete in the Can-Am Western Championships.
Representing the Jasper Ski Club, Nicole Frechette, Maggie McKenney, Patrick Mahler, Jackie Proc, Sadie Howe and Sam Wall competed in three days of racing against American and Western Canadian teams in Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom events. In total, there were 201 registered racers in the competition.
With plenty of fresh powder on the ground and World Cup length Giant Slalom courses, the events were mighty challenging, but all of the skiers pulled out some great races.
Highlights from the event include Sam Wall’s ninth place finish in Slalom and 14th in Giant Slalom and Jackie Proc’s ninth and 14th place finishes in two Giant Slalom races.
The racers are now preparing for the finals, which will take place in April at Sunshine Village, and Wall is preparing for the Whistler Cup, where he will compete with Team Alberta, April 4–6.
