Cold Lake Skijoring for MS thrills crowds and raises $37,000

The annual Skijoring for MS event took place on March 8 at the Cold Lake Agricultural Society, bringing excitement and energy, despite concerns over the lack of snow.

COLD LAKE -The annual Skijoring for MS event took place on March 8 at the Cold Lake Agricultural Society, bringing excitement and energy, despite concerns over a lack of snow due to a recent stretch of warm weather.

The event kicked off with a ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by thrilling races and aerial stunts as competitors showcased their skills on the custom-built snow track.

“We are so excited to have you and to be here and it's going to be a great day. We're going to maybe look a little different than we have in the past just because we're dealing with the weather. But we're going to get through it. We've made it to today. A few extra grey hairs and some stress,” said event announcer Lionel Romanchuk, speaking to the crowd.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland praised the dedication of volunteers and organizers in making the event possible.

“I just want to say on behalf of the City of Cold Lake, this is one of the best events that has been going on. It's a grassroots event. A lot of volunteers make this happen. This year with the weather, just a big shout out to the ground crew,” he said.

Copeland also highlighted the determination of the event team, referencing his communication with organizer James Purdy.

“I emailed James, I said, are we cancelling? And he said, ‘No.’ The course is up and running and that just talks about the spirit around here and the determination,” said the mayor. “So, hats off to them. Just a shout out to all the sponsors and the volunteers that helped James and the gang put this off.”

Organizer James Purdy emphasized the event's purpose as a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis (MS) research and support. “I myself have MS. There's a couple of other people that are out here,” he shared. “It's a joy to be part of this event as a fundraiser. My family and I have been doing a lot of different fundraisers over the years. It's by far the most fun.”

Purdy was relieved and excited about the event’s success, highlighting the hard work put in on the track, the presence of 50 competing teams, thrilling big-air stunts, and a full crowd enjoying the sunshine.

Skijoring for MS has been running for four years.

“In the past three years, we've raised around $65,000," he said.

By the end of the event, they had raised $37,000, the largest total so far, surpassing the $35,000 goal.

Beyond the fundraising efforts, the event celebrated the blending of different cultures and communities, bringing horse people and skiers and snowboarders together.

Looking to the future, Purdy expressed excitement about the event's continued growth. “We're really proud to be here. This event is bigger and better every year. It's awesome. We love all the followers.”
