A 53-year-old man is now being charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the double homicide of a mother and toddler that occurred in Hinton this September.

The accused was previously charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Robert Keith Major, a Hinton resident and a convicted sexual offender, has also been charged with two counts of indignity to human remains.

On Sept. 16, police responded to a report of a missing 24-year-old female and her 16-month-old toddler, who were last seen in Hinton.

In a Sept. 17 news release, RCMP confirmed that the bodies of the mother and her child had since been located.

Police later arrested Major on Sept. 17 in Hinton.

RCMP previously stated that Major had been living in the same apartment complex as the victims, and that the homicides took place on the afternoon of Sept. 16 at the apartment of Major, prior to the missing persons complaint.

Major is scheduled to appear at Hinton Provincial Court via CCTV on Dec. 15.
