“The timing is perfect for us,” said Jeff Bartlett, media and PR specialist for Tourism Jasper. “This would be announced in October and our Dark Sky Festival is the last weekend of the month.”

Along with Jasper, there are more than 300 diverse destinations in the running for the title, including Banff’s Moraine Lake and Vancouver’s Stanley Park, among many other international attractions.

“The public has their work cut out for them to decide what should be the eighth wonder,” said Kimberly Stirdivant Wason of VirtualTourist, admitting she was surprised by the number of nominations.

“Winning will be difficult,” said Bartlett, “but no matter what, it’s good to spread the word.

“And, if we look ahead and say, ‘Oh my goodness, Jasper wins,’ we’ll get a lot of great publicity out of it that could hopefully bring in tourism in the shoulder season when we’re so slow.”

This October, Tourism Jasper will host the third Jasper Dark Sky Festival. Bartlett wouldn’t give away any of the exciting details, but he did say, “it’s going to be a lot bigger this year.”
