Broken windows abound, suspects charged

“Every summer we get this resurgence,” said RCMP Cpl. Ryan Gardiner. “We’ve caught most of them with the downtown stuff.

“Every summer we get this resurgence,” said RCMP Cpl. Ryan Gardiner. “We’ve caught most of them with the downtown stuff.”

In the latest cases of mischief, quick witness response times and increased downtown patrols have assisted the Jasper RCMP in locating, arresting and charging suspects.

Three men have been charged in relation to the broken windows at Smitty’s, Jasper Source for Sports, Jasper Motorcycle Tours and the downtown Marmot Store.

Facing charges are Jasper residents Kacey Basalle, 21, (Source for Sports) and Robert McFadden, 24, (Jasper Motorcycle Tours and the Marmot Store), as well as Thomas Chiasson, 25, (Smitty’s) of Montreal, Que.

In addition to those cases, the RCMP apprehended the two men responsible for the broken windows at the Horseshoe Club, both of whom have agreed to pay for the damage.

“That kind of petty mischief going on kind of just goes with the season,” said Gardiner.

The RCMP remind the public that in order to locate “the small group of individuals responsible for the majority of our crime,” witnesses need to come forward.

“This is a community issue,” states a May 3 press release, “and we cannot solve crime or lower crime rates without the cooperation of the community.”
