Election Talk: Getting to know the 2013 council contenders

During the designated two-hour window Monday morning, 23 eager candidates turned in their nomination papers for the Oct. 21 municipal election.

During the designated two-hour window Monday morning, 23 eager candidates turned in their nomination papers for the Oct. 21 municipal election. Among them were three candidates for mayor, including incumbent Richard Ireland, and 20 candidates for the six seats on council, including incumbents Rico Damota, Dwain Wacko and Gilbert Wall.

There are also two candidates running for the one school trustee position. They are Gerry Lettner and incumbent Betsy DeClercq. Check next week's 51°µÍø for profiles on Lettner and DeClercq and for more from the candidates for mayor and council.

The municipal election is Oct. 21. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Jasper Activity Centre. There will be an advanced poll Oct. 16 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., also in the activity centre.
For those who won’t be able to vote on election day or during the advanced poll, there will be a special ballot process. Those ballots are only available by contacting Beryl Cahill, Jasper’s returning officer, at 780-852-6503.
