The e-waste round up is back, an event where people bring household hazardous materials for recycling and safe disposal. This June 8 event takes place in the parking lot beside Jasper the Bear and will run alongside a new initiative called the community shred event, which involves shredding of personal and/or sensitive documents to avoid identity theft.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jasperites can bring up to six file boxes of documents and watch them be shredded. It’s asked that people donate one food bank item per file box.
A new monthly program called community conversations has started in partnership with the library and the first one is on June 5 at the seniors lounge. The discussion will be on green energy, said Cooper.
“We have had a lot of discussion with ATCO about the Palisades power plant and potential for the Astoria dam, but what will be great about this discussion is people can ask questions and I can fill them in on [the] progress to date about that.”
Kids will also engage in Environment Week through many activities, including Wild Wacky Walking Wednesday, which occurs on Clean Air Day. “The kids figure out creative ways to get to school instead of being driven there. They make these great costumes and make these crazy contraptions, like one kid sits on a skateboard attached to a bicycle and has a box over him that’s all decorated.”
Barb Schmidt’s class at Jasper Junior/Senior High School has made creative videos about environmental topics, which will be circulated online throughout the week.
Freewheel Cycle’s Great Bike Giveaway is a definite highlight for the younger crowd. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 wrote about how biking is good for the environment and why they need a new bike in order to enter a contest to win one of three cruisers. Winners will be announced at noon on June 8, at the e-waste round up and community shred events.
A complete list of Environment Week events is available on the municipality’s website by clicking the “living here” tab and selecting “environmental stewardship.”
