“[The theme] can be interpreted any way that anybody wants, as long as they’re showing their pride. We encourage everyone in the community to participate.”
It’s also good advertising for a business or cause to parade its float in front of many people.
There have been many elaborate and creative floats over the years, but people don’t have to go all out, she adds. “We’ve had clowns, bikes, scooters, whatever people would like to do.”
Judging happens before the parade begins and ribbons will be awarded for the top floats. There are many categories, said Couture.
During past parades there have been upwards of 25 floats, but as usual, “participation depends on how involved the community decides it would like to be.”
Aside from the not-to-be-missed parade, there will be other festivities to celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday. This includes the popular pancake breakfast hosted by the municipality’s mayor and council, a flag-raising ceremony, music, fireworks, and numerous other activities for adults and children alike.
All the creative float designs can be seen during the parade, which will begin at 1 p.m. on July 1. Some people who enter a float may also choose to hand out candy or goodies to parade spectators.
