Taste of the Town postponed indefinitely

For many years, the iconic Taste of the Town has been the key fundraiser for the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives’ operating budget. Unfortunately in the past few years it has become increasingly difficult for local restaurants and hotels to participate during the Jasper in January schedule as it is already such a busy time. So, last year the popular event changed its date, separating itself from the festival.

And, this year, the event, which was schedule for April, has been postponed, as the immediate need for a new roof has drained the organization’s volunteer pool.

The volunteers plan to regroup, rethink the event and emerge with a new time and look. The museum welcomes new volunteers and ideas.

Roof fund nearly halfway there

Museum volunteers went door to door and blitzed the town to garner donations for its ailing roof last month and to date $32,370 has been raised.

That total includes $10,000 from the Jasper Volunteer Fire Brigade and $22,370 from volunteer door to door efforts and the donation link on the museum’s website.

For $25 anyone can buy a square foot of the museum roof, ensuring that Jasper’s history and heritage is preserved for years to come.

The organization’s fundraising goal is $70,000.

In an attempt to garner donations from outside of Jasper, a representative from the museum did an interview with CKUA radio. To hear it, visit .

The museum is also still collecting pennies. As of April 4, $2,052.49 worth had been raised.

Get your ‘Rave On’

For 10 years, Mark Kozub met with his band The Raving Poets in smokey little bars and coffee houses on Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue.

Week after week, they played to jazz tinged music, bringing to life works from novices and professionals alike.

And this week, Kozub, in collaboration with the Creative Campus, is bringing his years of experience to Jasper to teach the basics of writing and performing poetry. On Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. he will teach workshop participants how to put feeling into each word, as they are picked up with the eyes and ears and passed through the heart.

To register for the $30 workshop, call 852-4747. And to learn more about Kozub and The Raving Poets, check out Backroom Beat, a documentary about the band that has appeared on Bravo! Network and Book Television. You can also find videos of Kozub’s performances on YouTube.

Willmore film premier in Jasper

Humans are but a speck in time.

Mountains are timeless. They are a silent witness of those trails rarely travelled and those who ventured upon them.

On April 4, roughly 100 people attended the Whyte Museum of Banff’s film premier and book launch of Women of the Willmore Wilderness. The book spans three time periods and features the way of life for the women who blazed a trail into a man’s world. Spanning three generations, these women, married into this life or were born into it, share adventures that are hard to even imagine.

Jasper will have its chance to see Women of the Wilmore Wilderness at the Chaba Theatre, April 20. The showing begins at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and all proceeds will be donated to the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives.
