Book drop picks up readers

If you’re out and about in Jasper next week and come across a book that has a big #readmeAB sticker, pick it up, take it home, read it, and pass it on.

During the last week of May, Literacy Alberta is celebrating its 10th anniversary with “book drops” at public locations across the province. The Jasper Adult Learning Centre will place books around Jasper.

“It’s a way to encourage reading,” said Allison Hands, literacy and essential skills coach at the learning centre. “We’ll put ours in plastic bags and they can be anywhere, for example, on park benches or a hiking trail.”

If you find a book, you will be entered to win a prize if you let Literacy Alberta know where you found it. You can do this by tweeting #readmeAB, posting on , or emailing [email protected].

Fundraising continues

With the help of the community, the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives has raised $47,000 of its $70,000 goal.

The organization has been collecting funds since March to repair its ailing roof, and since then, many community groups have stepped up to help the cause. The United Church Thrift Shop held a fashion show and tea, Totem Ski Shop donated the proceeds from the Spring Run Off, Robinsons organized a barbecue, there was a showing of Women of Willmore Wilderness and the Jasper Fire Brigade started things off with a $10,000 pledge.

The museum’s fundraising efforts, through the collection of pennies and the sale of pieces of its roof—one square foot for $25—are still ongoing. Donations can also be made on its website, .

Get your plant on

Jasper United Church is hosting its annual plant sale next weekend.

The sale ends at 7 p.m. on Thursday and continues the following day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The last day to snag some plants is Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
