Routine traffic stops yield drug seizures

Traffic stops outside the townsite resulted in the seizure of more than two kilograms of cocaine and 70 kilograms of marijuana late last month.

The drugs were taken from four vehicles, all stopped for traffic safety infractions.

On April 24, a 36-year-old driver and his 32-year-old passenger, both from Fort McMurray, were found with more than a kilogram of cocaine in their vehicle.

The following day, three cars were stopped. In the first, a 25-year-old man from Surrey, B.C. was found with more than half a kilogram of cocaine. Later, a 21-year-old man from Victoria, B.C. was found with more than 45 kilograms of marijuana, and a 28-year-old man from Edmonton was found with more than 27 kilograms of marijuana.

To put those quantities into perspective, Supt. Howard Eaton, officer-in-charge of Traffic Services, stated in a press release, “That’s over 19,000 doses of cocaine and over 250,000 joints that won’t hit the streets.” He also noted that it’s believed the drugs were en route to Fort McMurray and Edmonton.

All five men have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, and are scheduled to appear in Jasper court June 13.

A second chance at Women of Willmore

If you missed your chance to see Women of Willmore Wilderness during the Chaba Theatre showing last month, you’re in luck, the film will be screened at the Hinton Library May 10.

It is being presented by the Hinton Historical Society as a fundraiser to assist in the completion of the main levels of the Hinton Station House.

The film starts at 7 p.m. and is being shown in the Teck Coal Room.

Bidding on bikes

Stuff your wallet with bills, bid on your favourite ride, hand over the cash and head home with a bike.

That’s the order of events at the annual Lion’s Club bike auction, taking place May 11.

The bikes for sale are collected by Parks Canada staff and bylaw officers and then are donated to the club, whose members fix them up.

The McCready Centre doors open at 10 a.m. for bike perusal, while the bidding starts at 11 a.m.

The money raised will benefit the club’s various charitable endeavours.
