“I think the intent of the award and nomination was to build awareness of the value of municipal government in the country,” said Ireland, noting that because of that he doesn’t see the medal as recognition of him, but rather as recognition of everyone who came together to bring municipal government to Jasper—a town that he’s “just so proud to serve.”
Ireland has been involved in municipal government in Jasper for more than 20 years.
As chair of the Jasper Town Committee, he played an integral role in bringing local government to town, acting as a spokesperson in negotiations with the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta.
He was chair of the committee for 14 years before the Specialized Municipality of Jasper was established in 2001, and he has been the mayor of Jasper ever since.
Robin Campbell, MLA for West Yellowhead, presented the medal, saying that it’s only fitting that Ireland was recognized at the Volunteer Banquet. “Richard is mayor, but really he’s a volunteer.”
