Banff and Canmore RCMP charge four suspects in drug and firearms investigation

On Feb. 2, 2023, Canmore RCMP and Banff RCMP began an investigation into an incident that occurred in Dec. 2022 of unlawful possession of a firearm.

As a result of a joint investigation between Canmore and Banff RCMP detachments, on Feb. 4, 2023, officers with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at a residence in the Silvertip area of Canmore.

As a result of the search, RCMP seized:

  • Three shotguns, two of which were loaded
  • Two loaded handguns
  • Several rounds of ammunition
  • 260 grams of suspected cocaine
  • $800 in Canadian currency

RCMP have arrested and charged Austin Clark Desylva, (26), a resident of Canmore, with:

  • Pointing a firearm
  • Weapons offences (x20)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance
  • Possession of property obtained by crime.

Desylva was taken before a justice of the peace and released with his next court appearance date set for Feb. 22, 2023 at Canmore Provincial Court.

Three other males, aged 36 to 45, all residents of Canmore were also taken into custody and released on recognizance.

Canmore and Banff detachments worked in close collaboration to bring this investigation to its successful resolution, says Staff Sergeant Ryan Singleton Detachment Commander of Canmore RCMP.
