Festival organizers are hosting the competition that will see one musician or band win a spot on stage at the Jasper Folk Music Festival, which takes place Sept. 13-15 in Centennial Park.
Showing up to the event not only supports the showcase of local musicians, but also the return of a music festival to Jasper. The last one occurred six years ago.
“We decided that if we could manage a festival it would be fair to open it up to everyone else,” said Simon Chisotti, head of the festival’s media committee.
Artists from as far away as Hinton and the Robson Valley are welcome, he added. Battle Royale is also open to all types of musicians and genres.
“We’re going to have two categories. The band category is three or more musicians and then the second category is for solo/duo artists.”
Each act will have the chance to play at least one song, perhaps more depending on the total number of entries in the competition.
There will also be silent auction items to bid on while listening to some of the best musicians this region has to offer.
Three local artists will judge the competition, and there will also be a fourth guest judge whose identity will be revealed at the Battle Royale. The winner from each category is guaranteed a to-be-determined time slot on stage during the festival.
On the festival front, things are going well, said Chisotti. “We’re just waiting right now for all the grants to come in.”
