The U7 Jasper BearCubs hosted their home tournament this past weekend, and it was the cutest hockey you'll ever watch.
First of all, this was the biggest tournament that I have ever witnessed as a parent who has had children in hockey for over 10 years. With 150 players in attendance plus their families, the arena was packed.
With the arena lights dimmed down, every player entered the ice through smoke and lights like real superstars. There were a total of 18 half ice games played over the course of the weekend, with MVP and Heart & Hustle awards for each game.
The skills competition was the highlight of the weekend for many of the players, as Jasper the Bear braved the net and tried to make as many saves as he could. After all, the first goal of U7 hockey is to have fun.
As for the details of the games, well, as you may or may not know, there is no scorekeeping at this age. No penalties, no offsides and no icing. But there are plenty of goals, saves and puck battles. Some players spend their whole time on the ice waving to the crowd, trying to talk to their parents through the glass, and making small talk with the referees. But as long as they are having fun, that's all that matters.
The U7 BearCubs would like to thank all of the generous businesses and individuals who donated to our raffle table, or to our tournament in any way whatsoever. These donations are what make minor hockey possible.
